OarTec Rowing Simulator - £2,500

Conventional ‘straight pull’ rowing machines offer a great cardio workout, but they’re not much like being in a boat. The OarTec, however, is designed to work the same muscles and movements as real rowing, with different settings letting you scull with two oars or row with one.

Bodycraft Jones Lateral Smith Machine - £1,300

A Smith machine lets you lift weights up and down without needing a spotter. The Jones machine (see what they’ve done there?) goes one better. The bar can move both forwards and backwards, so you can do lunges and good mornings with proper form, and activate stabiliser muscles on the bench press without worrying about dropping the bar on your throat.

Teddy Atlas Everlast Workout System - £110 + p&p

Flailing away at a bag will help get you fit, but this bit of kit, endorsed by Teddy Atlas, who trained boxing champs Michael Moorer and Barry McGuigan, will improve your skill and stamina. Each of the numbered panels on this heavy-duty hanging bag corresponds to a different punch (7 is a jab, 5 is a left hook to the liver), and with Teddy shouting combinations on the enclosed CD, you’ll hone your reactions and your accuracy.
